POLYMER CLAY
From The Woodwork
With “illusion” as my art class concentration in the spring of 2019, I thought that this fit very well. I wanted to improve my textural sculpting skills, so I tried to sculpt something to look like driftwood. To tie into my theme, I hid a face in the twisting forms of the wood. Everything is clay except for the moss, which I bought at a local craft store.

POLYMER CLAY
Coral Serpent
In order for this piece to fit into my multiple realities concentration, I asked myself what kinds of things might exist in the deep ocean. I had just taken oceanography and discovered that we’ve only explored a small fraction of the ocean, which led me to imagine what sorts of creatures might still be out there. To further convey my concept, I displayed this creature on a museum-like pedestal with a common and scientific name plaque next to it.

POLYMER CLAY/PLASTER
Sucker
For this project, I made my first plaster cast of my hand using a kit I got from the craft store. It made the sculpture much easier to complete and dramatically improved its overall look. The lollipop snake is clay, and I used mesh netting to create the pattern. Since my theme was illusion, I wanted the piece to initially appear as if it was one thing, but reveal itself to be something completely different. I enjoyed watching people’s reactions as they walked around the sculpture.

One idea I had in order to fit my concentration of alternate realities was AI. I wondered what the future might be like if companies like Google were already selling products that listen to us in our homes. So, I came up with this design. The robot is over four feet tall and made from an EVA foam sheet that I cut, shaped, painted, and hung over a rolling IV stand. It was then placed in my school’s library.

PAPER
Turn Some Pages
To add breadth to my portfolio, I decided to use a different medium. Paper was something I had easy access to, and something I did not have much experience in paper but my theme had to do with a book and I figured it was appropriate. For the project, we had to pick a quote that spoke to us and create a piece based off of it. I chose the lyrics “If you’re tired of the same old story, turn some pages,” from “Roll With the Changes” by REO Speedwagon. My idea was to have two hands holding up a book with a page in the process of being turned.

FOAM & LATEX
Gourdon
This was my first time casting in latex. I first sculpted the gourd, dunked it in alginate, which then hardened around it. I pulled it from the alginate and brushed in latex. Once that was dry, I sprayed expandable foam to fill the rest in. I then de-molded the sculpture. The latex shrunk a bit and left a wrinkly texture, which, thankfully, worked to my advantage here. Because of it, though, I wouldn’t use the same process again. I painted it with a mixture of acrylic paint and liquid latex to avoid cracking. This sculpture was part of my multiple realities concentration. Here, I designed a character around a reality in which plants were alive and had a consciousness.

Plane Dress
To come up with the concept for this project, I asked myself the questions,”what if cubist paintings weren’t actually stylized? What if that was what people actually looked like?” Cubism was popular in the 1910s, which was why I chose to dress her the way I did.

Gipsy Danger
Gipsy Danger was a project that I started in 2016. It was a challenge to create all of the patterns from scratch while still trying to maintain the right proportions. The design is based off of the movie Pacific Rim. I made drastic improvements to it in 2017, such as lights on the chest and head, to create a version 2.0.

Wonder Woman Armor
Completed in just one week, this armor was made for my school’s spirit week. I knew I wanted to wear one of my costumes to school for character day, but I hadn’t made any that I could physically wear to school. Since Wonder Woman had come out earlier that year, I decided to put my time management skills to the test and fabricate her armor.
